Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oil: What’s the difference?

Oil Life

Synthetic Oil:
The addition of unique polymers helps synthetic oil maintain its viscosity, even after prolonged use, thus increasing its lifespan.

Conventional Oil:
Conventional oil is not manufactured with these unique polymers, which means it often suffers from a shorter lifespan than synthetic oil.

Engine Performance

Synthetic Oil:
Delivers better lubrication, which prolongs engine life, reduces sludge buildup, & helps improve fuel economy.

Conventional Oil:
Is susceptible to creating sludge and dirtying & clogging oil filters. This can be as damaging to an engine’s performance & lifespan as oil that has lost its viscosity.

Cost

Synthetic Oil:
While oil changes with synthetic oil cost more, the prolonged life of synthetic oil means you can often go longer between oil changes, costing less over the life of your vehicle.

Conventional Oil:
Oil changes with conventional oil cost less, but your oil will need to be changed more often with conventional oil, costing more over the life of your vehicle.

Manufacturer Requirements

Synthetic Oil:
Synthetic oils are increasingly becoming required by the manufacturer for use in modern vehicles, but even older vehicles will perform better with synthetic oil.

Conventional Oil:
If you drive a newer vehicle, you could void its warranty if you use conventional oil in oil changes.

The verdict?

Synthetic Oil:
All of these advantages add up to synthetic oil being better for your vehicle, both in the short term, with longer oil life and helping increase fuel economy, and in the long run, prolonging the life of your vehicle’s engine and maximizing your investment.

Conventional Oil:
Conventional oil has a shorter lifespan than synthetic, is more prone to losing its viscosity/dirtying, thus damaging your engine, costs more over the life of your vehicle, and can void your warranty if you’re driving a newer vehicle.
